I thought about opening the box and spreading ashes in his favorite spots. He loved going in the river, that would be an appropriate place. I guess I'll decide when I get there.
Curiously, about 2 weeks before I made the decision to have him put to sleep, (he had liver cancer too) Providence decided that I should adopt two older puppies that were running loose in the pastures and woods in back of our house.
They are brother and sister and look almost identical. Buckwheat was a Shepherd/Lab mix, these guys are 40 lbs each. It's a little different having small dogs, but I'm sure happy to have 'em, they are real characters. They look like miniature labs, I'd love to know just what breeds are in these guys.
Then, about 3 or 4 months ago, I saw a dog get hit on an expressway. I picked him up and took him to a vet, thinking I would get him adopted out after he mended. He's still with us, although he was on thin ice for a while. He looks like a Spanish bulldog, but I don't think they breed those anymore, so I guess he's some kind of Terrier/Mastiff mix. He's a fighter, and he wanted to fight our dogs when he first began feeling better. Now, after being neutered and being showered with affection, he's a big pussycat.
Judging from his demeanor when he was new here, I think he was hollered at and hit at his former home. His turnaround has been amazing. A little love and non-violence go a long way. |
