Bob, you've cetainly started an interesting thread....

Without trying to be flip, your questions bring an immediate answer
to mind, "I'll know it when I see it!"

With respect to a TV, I don't care if it is flat or projection. Undoubtabley our family will purchase which ever has the clearest, most natural color and image available, i.e. the most life like. I would certainly wish to couple this with the maximum in reliability and therefore would be cautious with any brand new technology. I'll date myself here, but its kind of like when I was growing up, my father would never buy a new car when it was its year of introduction. Let them get the bugs out first. I believe that the difficulty with
your question is that most people are not compelled to "own if first".
Therefore they can adopt the "I'll know it when I see it approach".

Regarding a computer monitor, I have no problems with the current
CRT. I have two on my desk that I look at all day so I would always like a higher resolution or anything else that is easier on the eyes.
Would I pay twice the current CRT price? No. I've been taught in this current environment to be patient and the price will rapidly fall. Flat monitor? Mine computers are all backed by windows so where would I hang it? Twice the size, wider viewing, not really.
Twice the battery lifetime in a portable? Yes, I own VLNC.

As you can tell by my technical answers, Bob, I believe that I am typical of the consuming public that has been taught to go to the store and compare before purchasing. So in sum, we want "more" whether its resolution or battery life, for less and less money.

After rereading this I may be doing you more of a diservice with this answer than service but perhaps it will provoke more comment.

Best regards, Dave
