You would have to travel to Ghana and Seattle too,I recommend both.

As well as have a Sonera SIM in Finland, and not the worst SIMs in neither
Seattle nor Ghana.. as well as make sure the same SMS servers were used,
probably the most important factor, besides how the networks set up the
SMS polling system for the handsets camping in their network, which
also brings in stuff like how they handle domestic or roaming handsets.

I actually assume the just a little, little lengthy SMS pong to Seattle is because of heavy
traffic there, I usually SMS Ghana outside the peak hours for both here and there,
not so for Seattle.

I have oviously corrected for half of the polling time of my handset, once every
4th or 6th second, could be programmed by the network to 8 seconds, but also down
to 0.25 seconds.
This by not starting to count from the press of <send> but from when the SMS message
is actually transmitted "through the antenna". At the minimum
one need to place the handset close to a radio, active PC loudspeaker or under
the monitor, something everyone usually have handy)

Remembering that one should also obviously understand that another important factor
is when the network can send me the received receipt, in 4,8 or 12 seconds, if
Sonera does not up my polling time just after sending something, in which case it
might be a question of 0.25-0.5-0.75-etc seconds.

0.25 seconds would be at the limits of how fast the electrones could
interact, exchange quantums, there and back, around the planet or via a satellite,
so that would be stupid.

But the obvious improvement is to not have silly software in the SMS servers
on both sides, to keep the SMS message on some hard disk for a minute
or two, or even eight, as in "Wap is Crap" for those with Crappy SMS servers and networks.
(who thought it would be OK to delay SMS messages for some minutes, who cares??)

Ilmarinen

Maybe the Crap difference is with SMS servers who check if my possibly
only prepaid card still has the money on it???

Naah, I think that took even a week in the Wap is Crap Land??

Ooops, sorry, that was for post-paid bills, those going on a weeks
vacation to Mallorca or Madagaskar, having everyone call them
and calling everyone, and some 2,000 Sterling bill when getting back home,
althouhg the billing database system should be updated at least every night??

Hmm, makes sense anyway, that must not happen with a pre-paid card with only 10 cents left??
Strange that it doesn't take a minimum of next morning to deliver SMS messages, or
a week if roaming internationally...

(btw, my buddy in Ghana is prepaid, but is not billed for receiving SMS messages, smart
solution, while the local banking system waits for WAP-GPRS banking)

PS. Was fun pulling your beak...
