Interesting article about the drive makers' product roadmap this year. I've cut-and-pasted the Maxtor and Western Digital excerpts below:

"...Not yet at the 6-Gbyte threshold is Maxtor Corp., Milpitas, Calif. Its latest hard drive is DiamondMax, with a 5.1-Gbyte version priced around $480, said Roger Reich, product marketing manager.

"There will be a small market for the absolute cream of the PC ndustry at 6 Gbytes," Reich said.

Maxtor does plan a future announcement to say it will be in the market
with a 6-Gbyte product, but Reich declined to say when...."

"....At Western Digital Corp., Irvine, Calif., it pays to stay away from the 6-Gbyte market. "Ninety-five percent of the drives sold for $400 or less on the client [side]," said Rich E. Rutledge, director of marketing. "To cover the last 5 percent would cost us more than we would get back."

That does not rule out a 6-Gbyte drive in the future. "Suffice to say, we do have these products on our roadmap," he said. Western Digital's
largest desktop drive is its 4-Gbyte Caviar, priced around $400..."
