thanks for your help

just figured it out

=COUNT(A1:A5)
gives a count of only numerals in the specified range

=COUNTA(A1:A5)
gives a count of numerals and text in the specified range

wanted to count the number of symbols in my trading spreadsheet .... which were text entries...
