Frank,

All along I have viewed this as a tantrum driven by folks in a relatively new industry, that think they are special.

No one says anything when their Doctors office 'outsources' their accounting or their lab work (although interestingly new technology is re-insourcing some lab's). In fact lab companies and accountants often co-located in medical buildings or parks to serve groups of practices in an area.

IT is no different - its often a backoffice function peripheral to the business at hand. This is where the outsourcing started - EDS taking over claims processing for Medicare and Medicaid. Offshoring involves taking that discrete function and moving it physically to another country.

Now the recent doomsday trend is IT developers using outsourcing to develop product. This is simply a step in evolution - some will take it too far and fail and others will find a balance as the author of the article discovered.

As to the next crisis - Lou Dobbs and his ilk will invent one after their done with Mexico :-)
