re: the point is that we ALL waste fuel. It is YOUR opinion that cars with poor fuel efficiency constitutes an egregious form of waste. It is MY opinion that people that set their thermostat to 75 degrees waste more. People that drive when they could walk waste more.

Yes, but those solutions don't have the same impact, and they are hard to enforce.

Listen, gasoline inefficiency is a major problem.

*It drains money from the economy with little or no positive downstream economic effect (beyond energy company shareholders)
*Peak oil theory (depending on your beliefs) predicts a crisis. If it's even partially true, getting out in front of the problem is very important. 5% population/25% consumption makes us the most vulnerable to major disruption.
*High oil prices feed directly to our political "enemies". (Wonder how many petrodollars end up in the pockets of "terrorists"?).
*Pollution and subsequent health problems
*The possibility of global warming
*Balance of trade
*And frankly, gasoline is the lifeblood of our economy. With any major oil disruption, we shut down. Depression.

I agree with you that most government manipulation makes the marketplace less efficient (as it certainly has with the oil industry). In this case we need government intervention to in-cent efficiency. It's too important... unlike the other "issues" you listed.
