1. AOL is a centralized (read: communist) proprietary service.
2. AOL users proprietary software at both ends of the wire.
3. AOL is responsible for and controls all content on the service.

1) The Internet is a distributed open network.
2) The Internet uses open standards on both ends of the wire.
3) The Internet lets anyone and everyone provide content.

AOL is DOOMED because they are limited in the services they can provide versus what is and will be available on the Internet. The are also DOOMED because their software is Stone Age stuff compared with Java and they don't support any standards, never mind the new emerging standards. There are perhaps hundreds of developers for AOL content and software; there are millionis of Internet content and software developers. AOL IS DOOMED!

When the bombing stops and the legions of Internet users have been trained for 50 hours on AOL, the party will be over. They will begin to loose money several times faster than they are already doing, which already boggles the mind.
