Fallope, it seems like the competition...

...increases bit density by decreasing line width and cell sizes.

I think there must be physical limitations to this approach.
SanDisk is producing 256Mbit NOR flash with 0.24 micron line
widths (I believe that was the latest shrink) and MLC.

My guess is that multilevel cell techniques (SNDK) plus advanced
lithography and NAND cell design (Toshiba) will result in a very
cost effective ultra-high density NAND product.

It is also important to remember that Samsung is a SNDK licensee.
If they boost their NAND output we should recognize more licensing
revenues with the ramp up.

It was discussed on another board that SSTI and Vanguard want to
get into the higher density flash market and a $2.0 billion dollar
investment in a Taiwanese fab is planned. The announcement states
that NAND and NOR will be produced, presumably using SSTI's patented
cell structure for the NOR product. I don't know if SSTI has made a
NAND product before. Their NOR product seems best suited for low
and ultra-low density applications. To my knowledge they have not
announced any major breakthroughs on the high density front.
Additionally, their ADC (embedded) product will use NAND purchased from
others. The desire to have a high density NAND product seems strong.
Well, they are entering into a market already crowded with stiff
competitors with a big head start. Therefore it seems...

...STRANGE that everyone is migrating to high density flash and pouring
big bucks into fabs here and there despite the reported
"oversupply" of flash that is anticipated.
