A absolute must read.

The most clear-eyed exposition of the Iranian and Muslim nuclear problem I have ever read. No policy recommendations, but how could the writer have any given the complexity of the problem?

I especially thought that the background material on Muslim law on jihad was valuable. It is clear that the last few years have resulted in a thorough overthrow of previous doctrine which, though bloody at the outset, would have prohibited indiscriminate attacks such as 9/11. If in our world we think that 9/11 changed all, in the Muslim world the apparent doctrinal acceptance of suicide bombing changed all, too.

As the writer notes, nuclear deterrence is degraded because "martyrdom" is welcomed. In other words, how can deterrence be effective if a nuclear power has no compunction about the wholesale slaughter of its own citizens in a retaliatory strike? And this seems the inexorable trend in Muslim doctrine which suicide bombing started.

Thanks for bringing the article here.
