In any case, the only innovation of any real consequence in this debate (at least as of today) is the success of the GUI. Which also brings forth an important point. Up until 1990, Microsoft being a software company, could not even patent its inventions. Ever since they software patents were allowed, Apple and Microsoft have run even more or less even.
