Cable Modem .....

I'm posting this not knowing if it will help ANYONE ...
but
it surely was a persistent thorn in my side for the better part of this year .....

I finally got it solved ....and so, should anyone else need these instructions ...here they are ...

I run multiple boxes with multiple screens
and have two phone ISPs and two cable ISPs ....

since I'm continually swapping hard drives, mother boards, etc ... I've become adept at installing these 4 hookups to the internet ..
HOWEVER >>>>
from time to time I've had the dickens of a time getting a new box to run all 4 *(needless to say this is NOT AT THE SAME TIME) .... but having the capability to use them ... whichever one I want to ...

here is the END result ... the one that I would eventually get the box to have/do
this is what I wanted ====>
BOX ===>
turn the thing on and as W98se loads, the cable ISP that was used last on this machine is ready for instant on use ..

DeskTOP ===> icons for each of the phone dialups ...

Should I desire to use either dialup ISP ... clik icon and it dials up .... doesn't disconnect the cable, but it becomes non functional UNTIL the phone ISP is disconnected ...

this is what I had .. but most of the time I had to WORK to get it functioning properly ...

the tech help at both phone and cable were perplexed at WHY I would want SO MANY connections .... and evidently had no one else in their customer base who did so ...

as SIMPLE as it sounds NOW .. it was hell to find and get down to a simple process ...

with COX .. don't know about the other cable providers ... each machine is assigned an ISP number of its very own ...
I have two ... and I DID NOT comprehend that the ISP address was internally "bound" by Windows to THAT hard drive in the box which used it last ...
MY error....
not the ISPs ...
failure to understand is totally on me ....

the PROPER thing to do ..if one wants to use another box on THIS cable hookup next .....
and this could well hold true for other cable ISPs ...

BEFORE shutting down the box using the cable connection one MUST ***(here is the clik stream)

START>RUN>type in winpccfg>ENTER>RELEASE ALL
>>>>> turn OFF power to cable modem

BEFORE starting up another machine to use THIS cable connection ...
turn ON power to cable modem
wait until the lights quit blinking *(appx one minute)
boot up box
after Windows is loaded use this clikstream
START>RUN>type in winpccfg>RENEW ALL

now the box will run fine ...

looking back on it ...
I have reset the functions so many times that the process of installing new parts I would end up trying to get it to function properly that I would stumble upon the correct sequence .....
but it always took me more than a wee bit of time .. most of the time I would simply settle for a box to run on EITHER cable OR either of the phone ISPs ...
but
I decided to find out what to do
and to do it .....

and now, I have done it. ...

wasn't cost effective .... heheheehe
but
damned if I was going to quit trying ...

so there it is IN CASE anyone else need it ....
