Thanks. Last night I did manage to get into Safe Mode. I had been waiting to see on the screen "Starting Windows ME," but that msg never appeared. I called a witness to confirm this fact, so sure was I that I was simply missing it. The way I did it was to click on the F8 key as soon as any print at all appeared on the black screen after the computer started booting up again.

This morning when I do it again, i'll listen for those beeps and do it your way. Beeps seem like a reassuringly specific signal.

Unfortunately, when I ran Scandisk, as instructed by Meghana, in Safe Mode, it kept having to restart "because Windows or another program has been writing to this drive. Quitting some programs...etc."

So I still haven't gotten to the defrag stage after two conversations with the very nice Meghana. I shall try again today. Lots of applications are shut down from the msconfig list, including, of course, Norton. So who knows what my fragmentation state is. One shudders to think.

Going now into the White Screen of Safety.... if you don't hear from me, send flowers and remember me kindly.
