I have tried that, and at least for me I find most spices are rather singular.

There is an old woman on the mountain here who knows all the plants and what is a good curative for what. she would take me for walks and pick things and have me smell them whole, and then crush them in my fingers and smell them again. there might be a survival reason for the distinctiveness.

is the scent soft or strong? sweet or sour? pungent or soothing? but then we can get ideas in our heads. I think Italy smeels like oregano.

just for fun sometimes I like to scent something that is a mix of spices and other things and see if I can name what's in it.
