That's what I was doing. The lockups came when I tested using the MS DOS prompt with the slightly changed settings. After poking through the MS knowledgebase last night without any further insights, I'm mostly just resigned to never using MS-DOS box on that PC again.

"To access the properties without starting ms dos prompt just right click and select properties. Hopefully that will enable you to be able to check settings without locking up your computer. "
