Everyone including you seems to think the big problem starts at the coax leading up to the customer (primarily because of the small upstream path)

This is confused. The upstream issue is independent and not very significant currently. The last mile, the "coax" so to speak, is only a matter of expense of upgrade. That isn't all that much of a negative for ATHM. In either case, this isn't the problem.

Milo has stated that their (ATHM's) portion of the network is sychronous...so it seems to me that ATHM's network is more ready for the next solution more than the MSO's, which everyone would like to see trashed in favor of pure fiber.

Synchronicity isn't much of an issue. MSO and ATHM don't compete, they complement. Doesn't mean that MSO might go elsewhere later to have someone else do what ATHM currently is doing. That's what the institutions fear and it isn't really the problem.

Pure is a future technology and isn't yet relevant to ATHM's current circumstance. Pure is a critical issue for MSO and telco. Even with them it isn't imminent.

There is no question that Att has caused enough of a "disbalance" so that AOL felt compelled to shoot themselves in the foot. That wasn't planned by Att. Att's motivation was primarily to provide ubiquitous telephone and data service. ATHM happened to be part of that strategy and it does make ATHM's network a small thing by diminishing its propriety.
