If one believes that the Supreme Being wants to torture those other people for eternity...how much value can one place upon the opinions and the lives of those other people??

My mother and sister (both divorced) belong to a liberal Presbyterian church that had as one of its sermons the topic of divorce (delivered by one of their ministers, a female) that was to discuss the sacrament of marriage, titled, "Therefore what God has joined together, let not man separate."

They both drew deep breaths as the words came forth, thinking it was going to be some rebuke (not that that had happened ever). It turns out that the interpretation was that it was not true today and was more analogous to the taking of property because of the social status of women then. Marriage didn't exist anymore in the way that it did in Jesus' day. Therefore, these words didn't apply! Now, see that is a funny interpretation of literal words.

Many people join churches as social organizations. A Hindu friend of our's described a similar phenomenon among educated Hindus. I think that education breeds tolerance and that these texts provide a sense of continuity for people facing radical changes to their lives and social structures.

I think we need to lead these horses to water and let them drink. Often, they'll drink slowly. Or, it they may sniff around a bit. My wife thinks I'm dreaming.
