Novgorod Telecommunications to commence GSM-1800 network by July - 3/25/02

Novgorod Telecommunications plans to launch a commercial GSM-1800 cellular network in Novgorod by July, as GIST s source in the company reported. Initially, the network will consist of 15 basic stations and a switch for up to 3,000 subscribers. China s company Huawei Technologies Investment will supply the facility to Novgorod Telecommunications while a relevant agreement is to be signed by the end of March. Novgorod Telecommunications offers services under the Unicell brand name and is fully controlled by Vostok Mobile B.V., which is a subsidiary of MCT Corporation operating in Russia under the Indigo brand. As GIST reported earlier, established in 2001, Indigo includes 27 regional cellular operators and as of late 2001 had a consolidated subscriber base of 583,000, Russia's fourth largest. In 2H01, twelve operators obtained GSM 1800 licenses, bringing the total number of Indigo operators with GSM licenses to 24.
