Two strategic towns falling on the same day is not a typical day in this war. Toretsk and Velika Novosilka. Toretsk was by far more challenging. Block by block, going through the city.

Velika Novosilka showed superior tactical skills of Russian command, rapidly put the Ukrainian defenders in check - mate.

South Donetsk has been a step child of the Ukrainian command, not receiving sufficient reinforcement, and suffering from tactical errors.

As Military Summary mentions, Ukraine military has been on retreat in Southern Donetsk, but Russia is channeling from one cauldron to another, denying them any advantage from being on defensive. Being on the run flips the normal assumptions, and the defender is suffering higher losses.
