Publication date: 2000-07-04

Australia's third largest telecommunications carrier, AAPT Ltd, plans to sell A$600 million (US$359.40 million) of bonds to fund the cost of building its code divison multiple access (CDMA) wireless network.

The company, now under the control of Telecom New Zealand, confirmed it has scrapped earlier plans for a share sale of its mobile phone business.

The CDMA network is scheduled to begin operating at the end of the year; AAPT aims to have about 900,000 subscribers by 2005.

AAPT also plans to spend A$130 million ($77.87 million) in the next 18 months building a broadband wireless network using LMDS (local multipoint distribution system) technology.

Exchange Rate: $1 = A$1.67
