11/20/2020 Contest update (Contest and Index YTDs are calculated from 1/3/2020 close.) Despite a raging pandemic and Trump’s seditious refusal to concede the election there was also the positive news of at least two effective Covid-19 vaccines. So with investors looking at a half empty, half full glass, stock indexes wound up the week not far from where they began. At Friday’s close, the Contest median was up 14.26% YTD (vs. up 15.25% YTD a week ago), the Nasdaq Biotech Index (NBI) was up 17.46% YTD (vs. up 19.41% YTD a week ago), the smaller-cap S&P Biotechnology Select Industry Index (SPSIBI) was up 34.84% YTD (vs. up 33.84% YTD a week ago), while the Nasdaq Composite Index (NCI) was up 31.42% YTD (vs. up 31.13% YTD a week ago). Contest leader JBOG’s portfolio finished the week with a stunning 328.23% YTD gain. I also wouldn’t deny boasting rights to second place FILO’s portfolio, up 178.38% YTD and third place MASTER’s portfolio, up 125.48% YTD. At Friday's close, 29 of the 42 Contest portfolios were in the green, with 20 still beating the NBI and 10 beating the SPSIBI. The 197 Contest stock picks have an average YTD gain of 30.90% with the median remaining in the red with a YTD loss of -1.27%. Below is the Top Ten list. Also below are the Top 5 & Bottom 5 Stocks for the week ranked by % Gained and % Lost YTD. (Prices not converted to US$ in these Tables.) Portfolio adjustments: MYOK buyout by BMY at $225. Used 11/17/20 close for reallocation. (All corrections, especially adjustments for splits & mergers, greatly appreciated.)
For those who haven’t yet read my earlier post, after 15 years I’ve decided to retire as Contest scorekeeper. If you’d like to take over the 2021 Contest, please let me know and I’ll be glad to help with the setup. If you can’t commit to weekly updates but are able to post less frequent updates I imagine that would be acceptable to Contest participants.
Enjoy a safe and relaxing autumn weekend biotechies. Best wishes for a wonderful socially distanced Thanksgiving! For a return to traditional holiday gatherings, as Brooklyn Dodger fans used to say, “wait ‘til next year.” Don’t forget to wear your mask and social distance. Peace & good health, Bulba
