Often wrong. They are estimates and are constantly brought up or down based on the general market strength. None of them foresaw the slow down this year, nor the recovery from the bottom until after the fact.

Biased. When have you ever seen a sell recommendation other than when the stock has already lost 90% or more of it's value? by the way, PCLN had an aweful lot of sells on it recently, and now all of a sudden it's a buy? Geez, come on.

Mostly for the benefit of the broker. Watch your level II when a major broker puts out an upgrade on a certain stock and watch who distributes the most.
