Yeah.. Sharif Ali. He was in Iraq for a number of months "shopping around" the idea of restoring the monarchy, but it's not clear that enough popular support existed at the time, given the Ba'thist and Al Qai'da influence that was prevalent at the time (they had no interest in a Hashemite restoration).

Sharif Ali also has the problem of a rival to the throne of Iraq.

But now that the Sunni insurgency is coming upon some hard times with the death of Zarqawi and a stronger government, it's possible that the idea might begin gaining ground over the coming months/years.

And I think this will require a major role on the part of Al-Sistani and King Abdallah of Jordan in advocating this alternative solution.
