As I understand it, a reverse merger occurs when a privately held company of some value takes over (merges with) a public company of lesser value that is already trading on an exchange. I read somewhere that a "shell" company with a valid trading symbol, and a semi-clean balance sheet is worth at least $300K in a reverse merger. It is a low cost alternative to going public by doing a true IPO.
