Mariner,

Thanks for posting the article. For over a year Microsoft has been denying that the CE in WinCE stood consumer electronics but we all know better as do the likes of Matsushita, Sony and the other established players in the consumer electronics industry. On July 1, 2000 when the FCC's mandate becomes effective for the end of the security technology monopoly of cable STBs and for the retail sale of such by CE OEMs you will see devices like D-VCRs, eTVs, DVD players, game players and other combo units incorporating the fairly inexpensive security technology thus eliminating the need for stand alone STBs in my opinion. This is why Gates demanded from Malone awhile back that the WinCE quota be met first before Personal Java and Sony's Aperios OS are used. I believe that there will be no need for more rental boxes after the WinCE order is filled and that MS has effectively shut out the competition.

A few days ago Nintendo, IBM and Matsushita announced the next generation game player that is also a DVD movie player with internet connection capabilities. Sony and Toshiba have similar ambitions. The former will be based on IBM's copper chip tech and as the latter will be more powerful than a Pentium III with better graphics than used by Pixar to produce Toy Story and all for under $400.00.
