Dan Dorfman says never buy on takeover rumors and I agree with him. 90% of them are false. That being said, most of the takeovers I have lucked into (because I happened to hold the stock) gave plenty of advance warning. Lotus, for instance, had already gone up three times before IBM bought it on takeover rumors, and the possible takeover had been reported by Dorfman and in PC magazine. J&J took a big position in Cordis months before they decided to buy the whole company. My experience with drug stocks is that they already have to producing good income before anybody takes them over. The two possible tech takeovers that have been most heavily discussed this year are Novell and Sybase, but nothing has happened with either of the them.
