Mark,

I also recall reading about this fellow Schmidt and his ability to pickout takeover targets. About a half year ago or so I bought about 4 mid cap midwest and SE regionals in one phone call; my broker suggested the John Hancock fund you mentioned. But like all sectors, for me, a mutual fund takes most of the fun away from casting your lot/acumen/luck/foolishness ( your choice ) with individual stocks.

One of the reasons I started this thread was to suggest folks take a look at GPFI, a very small regional in Northern Illinois. In the last Q they tripled their earnings per share from last year. Moreover, in addition to declaring a regular cash dividend, they are supposedly issuing a 10% stock dividend on rec. date 11/10/98. The bank is still well off its yearly highs and has not recovered as much lost ground as some of its larger and more well known bretheren.
