DELL Diary 2/14/99 Is there money in boxmaking?

When you are married..not much Valentines activities! :0)..My wife asks...do you know how DELL compares with the other boxes? Hmmmm...as a TAer, never really placed too much thought on that but...

Revenue.............................GTW............DELL.............CPQ
Revenue/eps 1996.........$5,035/1.60....$7,759/0.33.....$18,109/0.94
Revenue/eps 1997.........$6,293/0.71...$12,327/0.68.....$23,614/1.19
Revenue/eps 1998.........$7,472/2.21...$18,000/1.13*....$31,174/-1.82

*Assumes Niles was right on at $5.2b in sales and 0.31 in eps. I got thinking..if I was living in an imaginary world where there were only three boxmakers and the whole market was a total of their sales...which company had the consistent performance and a consistent market share gain? I also had to remember that CPQ sells more products and services than DELL.

Given the fact that GTW beat estimates and CPQ skimmed thru theirs, is it really realistic to think DELL would only meet 0.31; which is just 0.01 from Q3? It hasn't even started to get serious with the server end.....

I keep on thinking...i must be missing something.......
