Small is beautiful for asset management deal makers

That's the feeling among dealmakers in the asset management industry, where the number of mergers and acquisitions in the first seven months of 2001 is up compared with a year ago, even though the dollar value of the transactions is way off.

Waddell & Reed Financial Inc. (WDR.N), with its roughly $1.3 billion market cap, has often been the subject of takeover speculation. The company held talks about a possible alliance with several companies last year, but a spokesman for Waddell declined to comment. It looks like things are heating up again.
