RBAK ($3-$2.59) Cap=400mil 1st-Quarter Loss Narrowed as Revenue Fell 55%

SAN JOSE , Calif. -- Redback Networks (NasdaqNM: RBAK - news) Inc.'s first-quarter loss narrowed even as revenue slumped 55% amid the slowdown in telecommunications spending.

The network-infrastructure equipment maker late Wednesday said its net loss narrowed to $34.7 million, or 23 cents a share, from $400.5 million, or $2.92 a share, in the year-earlier period.

Results from both periods include impairment and restructuring charges, stock and other compensation-related expenses and amortization of intangibles. Excluding these items, considered part of continuing operations under generally accepted accounting principles, Redback Networks said it had a loss of $29 million, or 19 cents a share, wider than its year-earlier loss of $18.4 million, or 13 cents a share. The latest results matched a mean estimate from analysts surveyed by Thomson Financial/First Call....
