Infineon to invest $960 million in Dresden plant

Mar 31, 2000 -- German semiconductor maker Infineon Technologies AG said Friday it will invest over 1 billion euros ($960 million) in its Dresden plant over the next three years, creating some 1,100 jobs.

The German chipmaker said manufacturing technology that's been created in partnership with cell phone maker Motorola Inc. (MOT: news, msgs) will be among the products developed at the Dresden plant in Eastern Germany.

Infineon and Motorola have been developing 300 millimetre process technology since 1998 through a joint venture funded by the German Ministry of Education and Technology and the State of Saxony.

Infineon (IFX: news, msgs) said it will unveil further details of its investment plan in May. Currently some 2,800 staff are employed at the Dresden plant.

Infineon, a spin-off from Germany's biggest electronics and engineering company Siemens AG went public earlier this month.

Shares of Infineon tumbled 4.2 euros, or 7.2 percent, to 54.3 in Frankfurt trading.
