Ericsson says operators must invest in networks in order to upgrade to GPRS

STOCKHOLM (AFX) - LM Ericsson AB strategic head Torbjoern Nilsson said several European and US telecom operators have invested too little in their networks, and thus risk not to be able to upgrade to GPRS, reported Dagens Industri.

Nilsson said many operators' networks are currently overloaded.

"There are many operators in the US who have invested all too little in their base stations. That goes for a large number (of operators) in Europe as well. They are focusing on their balance sheets and want growth instead of investments," Nilsson was quoted as saying.

He named the US operators Cingular, one of Ericsson's customers, as an example, saying it will be difficult to upgrade the company's network for GPRS.

"Operators must start thinking about the quality of their services now," Nilsson added.
