It depends on the individual stock and how long you are willing to hold. Sometimes blow-off tops begin a full 100% retrace of the gains, and you have to wait for years to get another chance to take the profits you missing cashing in on. (I speak from experience.)

Really, it's more of an art than a science, at least for me.
