Joel,

I agree with all of your discussion that high R&D spending will,
from an accounting aspect, influence a companies value. However, to
use a term from Warren Buffets book, one must also look at the
intrinsic or franchise aspects of a company to properly assign a
valuation. In this category, Intel is a household word and a recognized
leader in computers. I am sure there is a large percentage of the
technical novice PC buyers who would not buy a computer unless it
said "Intel Inside". In addition, assigning a dollar value to the
intrinsic properties of a company is a black art which I still don't
know how to do, but you know it exists. Just look at a company like
Coca Cola which sells fancy sugar water.
