Supremacy, I'll say again, is not just in numbers. The feeling that Jews have that they are above others and need not be inclusive is definitely a feeling of supremacy.
The cynical use of the 10 Commandments, the bible or any other religious doctrine to hold sway over others is indeed a very bad thing. It is, however, not a religious statement but a statement of control over others too stupid to know any different.
The beauty of the Constitution and of the Founding Fathers is THE LACK of religion and the triumph of rationality and logic over superstitious claptrap. The idea of God was not a blue-eyed caucasian stuck up on a cross but that of a natural God not stuck in some brick and mortar church.
Jefferson would be very saddened, but unfortunately not surprised, by how low the US has sunk in this department. We're much closer to fundamentalist Islamic countries today than we are to the ideals of the Founding Fathers.
I don't think most people worship God. I think most people use God as a mother-comforter, father-punisher, gift-giving Uncle and the like. God as an ATM is more like it: gimme, gimme, gimme.
The Bushies are the ultimate God-as-an-ATM sect. Bush, after all, thinks that those who have money are favored by God and those who do not have money are lesser humans. |
