I disagree. Altera, for example, still derives ~55-60% of their revenues from CPLDs ( or macrocell devices). There is a class of logic functions which FPGAs cannot do well, and probably never will due to their architecture. This class of applications is one that is common to all high speed logic needs.CPLDs WILL be getting larger in the next year, and they will offer a performance level at ~30K gates unheard of with FPGAs. You may think of 30k gates as small, but for designs that need speed and density, they will be the new kid in the game. Large system on a chip fpgas are the vogue now, but we heard that about ASICs and chip sets too.
Now, that being said, my comments about the merger of Lattice and Vantis were pertaining to the usual problems and issues that arise out of any two organizations coming together. You have to remember that Vantis invented the CPLD and still holds most of the patents in the CPLD area. If not for AMD licensing some of the technologies, the world might look very different. Vantis still has very smart people working there, and has the only CMOS process development group of any programmable logic company. This is an important advantage as we break the 0.15 micron barrier in flash and esquared technologies.I think the merger was very much a strategic move by Lattice to build a formidable challenge to Altera. Xilinx is not even on the radar screen when it comes to CPLDs. They must ship dollar bills around every 95XX part they sell. There is a lot of money to be made in the CPLD area. Don't lose sight of this fact.
