Lamar, my browser just came already set up to handle pictures.
(Navigator 4.06). If you click EDIT|PREFERENCES|NAVIGATOR|APPLICATIONS
you get a list. Find GIF image on the list and single click it. Below it may say "handled by Netscape (internal)". That appears to be the correct setting, because my browser came that way. Same for other images, like jpg.

Maybe since its free, your friends would be willing just to download
the latest browser? It should display images OK as installed.

It is instructive to check other file types in the list to see
how they are handled.
