I'd hardly call FCEL an "emerging technology/company." Its technology has been around for the better part of 30 years but is cost effective only in special applications such as back-up power supplies or use in places requiring pollution free equipment. I'm also dubious about XOM buying a company such as FCEL, because the two have entirely different cultures. It reminds me of the time some 50 years ago when XOM insisted that its purchase of Reliance Electric would lead to more efficient electric motors, cutting the use of oil and gas fired electric generating plants. Didn't work out that way.

I think FCEL by itself has a viable technology that will become more cost effective especially if state and local regulators demand pollution free power, for example, in high rise buildings to provide power for elevators. So far, however, the company has been unable to capitalize on its technology.
