completely in line with the role of govt to ever increase its own power

Politicians want power - and money, which is also power. That's their nature. The US became a successful nation because our founders opted for limited government. However, over time, especially since the 30's... our politicians figured out that staying "involved" pays better. Not that their involvement does much good... but humans are extremely good at believing in things which happen to serve their interests.
