Bilow - I believe Balvenie is a speyside malt, which tends to have a lighter flavor than the isley malts. the younger scotch will always have more aromatics (and hence a little more bite and a stronger nose) and will have more of the character of the smoke used to stop the malting process. I like to sample the 8 and 10 year olds of a malt which also has a 12, 15 or 30 year old variety - you can get a real feel for what the ingredients are. In scotland you can only get the 8 and 10 year old variety at the distillery, 12, 15, 18 and 30 year olds are available in many scottish liquor stores. You might like laphroig - it is one of the more full-bodied of the isley malts. Taliskar is also a great malt, rich taste, it comes from isle of skye (the only malt distilled on skye), and is available in this country in 10 and 12 year varieties.
