One of the indicators I think matters about what's proper for you individually is whole-food cravings. When I didn't eat veggies much at all and processed foods dominated my diet, I had a craving for bananas. When I started adding a lot of veggies to my diet, I lost that craving. Now, for the last couple of years, it's been mushrooms. I could eat 2 or 3 pounds a week easily, raw or cooked. The one meat that almost always makes me feel good is white chicken meat. Those two dominate my choices. I follow those instincts.

My old boss had an unusual, almost comical craving for onions. When he ordered lunch for the office from a local fast-food joint, his own order went like this: I'd like a cheesesteak with extra onions. In fact, double it. When you're sure you've put too many on, double it again. He was born with a rare and incurable nerve disorder which finally took his life. In my opinion, whatever it was in onions - sulfur, ancillin, or something else, his body was searching for something to help with its fight for life.
