IBM unlocks the Cell: hpcwire.com

The article asks the question of the relevance of the one on one relationship between the planned amount of Opteron processors in the Roadrunner system (16K) and the amount of Cell processors in it (also 16K). IBM doesn't answer that question. It does say Cell is meant as accelerator processor for Opteron. I think it's possible that the one on one relationship is more important than IBM is telling now.

IBM further puts Cray in a negative light saying that IBM's Roadrunner system is real because they received an order for it and Cray's Adaptive Computing is only words with no development plan and no orders. Cray replies saying Adaptive Computing is real and a long term vision that's implemented in stages between now and 2010, and that for they received orders for the first stages.
