Old Messila, a town which is now right next to Las Cruces has the original starting out place of the Overland Stagecoach Company. My understanding is that the stagecoach had way stations every 20 miles where they changed horses and the passengers could dismount the stage for a bit of refreshment or to relieve themselves. jdn



Sure, the more often you changed horses the faster pace you could maintain. And commercial stagecoaches were huge things, like today's passenger buses. Very heavy, loaded with lots of people inside, outside, and on top, and baggage besides.

Using the horse requirements for big commercial stage coaches (the intervals for stopping and changing horses were the "stages") or express mail coaches as the standard for "coaches" is like using the fuel requirements for Mac trucks and Greyhound buses as the standard for automobile fuel requirements today. It's not exactly false, but it's quite misleading.
