<<Some ad experts fret that the whole approach may be a bit too
pushy, and they fear a user backlash. Imagine running an ad -- and watching in horror as visitors to that site start trashing it, live, for everyone else to see.>>

My understanding is that the ads won't actually appear in the chat rooms or auditoriums--they'll be placed in the "staging areas"--the windows where users select which chat sessions to participate in.

<<Advertising in general is annoying>>

I've found the ads displayed within AOL to be quite tasteful and unobtrusive. I've also found them to be quite effective. Starbucks has an extraordinary one--its pleasing animated image has quite clearly been lodged in my memory. I've noticed ad presentation quality improving on the Net as well.

I read a little bit more about AOL's conception for the ads. Two examples they gave were: 1) a Nike ad indicating their sponsorship of an auditorium chat with Michael Jordan or 2) an add from Johnson & Johnson for a chat related to health care issues.

Regards,
Eric
