Is now the time to buy? I think so!! ADR REPORT - French shares lower but steady

By Ian Simpson

NEW YORK, June 2 (Reuter) - French companies' American Depositary Receipts (ADRs) were steady at lower levels Monday amid jitters about the victory of the Socialist Party and its leftist allies in French parliamentary elections.

Traders said French shares were being supported as U.S. investors adopted a wait-and-see attitude toward the Socialist win in the Sunday vote.

``The French shares really got pounded early ... and I think it was a lot of late buying by American houses'' that buoyed the ADRs, one trader said.

Among French shares, engineering company Alcatel Alsthom (ALA) fell 1-1/4 to 21-1/2. The firm has been a bidder for electronics company Thomson-CSF, due to be privatized by the former conservative government.

The planned privatization has been thrown into doubt by the election results.

Oil companies fell. Elf Aquitaine (ELF) was down 1/2 to 51-5/8 and Total SA (TOT) was off 1/2 to 45-1/8.

Luxury goods company LVMH Moet Hennessy Louis Vuitton (LVMHY) rose 1/2 to 49-1/8.

ADRs allow U.S. trade of foreign shares.
