The problem with examining the wing during an EVA is that they run the risk of damaging the tiles.

Tile repair during orbit was studied extensively. It was determined that the difficulty of space walks under the vehicle posed a greater risk of damaging tile than the benefit which could be achieved.

Nevertheless, it is probably worth revisiting.
