AJ - I agree that the NYSE and NASDAQ are very concerned about the impact ECNs and ATSs are going to have on their way of doing business. I also think that, contrary to some conventional wisdom to the effect that the delays in deploying VTS between late 1997 and now have deprived ATG of an opportunity to get out in front of the current pack, the reality is that, as many firms and new combinations and joint ventures are now first announcing plans to go on line with new ECN systems in the future, ATG is actually going on line with VTS in a matter of days or weeks. Which is to say they are still in front of the pack, and going operational at the very moment when the ECN and ATS markets are just beginning to explode in the financial and mainstream press. Which may prove to be very good timing both to the performance of VTS and to the performance of ASTN stock.

Will they get media attention when they go live? I guess it depends . . . I have always thought the WSJ was biased against them because of Optimark (which Dow Jones owns a significant interest in) but in the end I wonder how important it really is in the short term. The industry appears to be aware of VTS, and their customer base is certainly aware, and if that is true, then with the volumes that will result, it is only a matter of time before media attention is inevitable.
