a similar argument can be made for conversion to Christianity - In India the Missionaries offered lots of economic aid (like a house a job etc) to convince some of the locals to convert to Christianity. There are different ways to convince different people to convert religion. King Akhbar - a Mogul King whose ancestors had invaded India to setup the Moghul Empire, married a Hindu lady - that led to some kinda bonding, and people converted in both directions.
