Also, there are a number of examples of good writers (Jane Austin, as I recall) who have used "their" in a singular sense, so maybe we are being too rigid. I also go out of my way, as you do, to change my sentences around so that they are both politically and grammatically correct. Likewise I would never use the word "niggardly", because I know that 99% of the population would take it the wrong way. Even if they are ignorant, their feelings deserve respect, and there is no reason to make them angry with me.
