The day was darker at 12:06 than it had been at 12:05. The sun-filled Colorado afternoon became clouded with tears as the schoolyard ran bright red with the blood of our children. Twenty-five dead. I walked home past the State Capital building where a small group was gathered for a long-planned event, Take Back the Night, to battle against the violence and fear that follows our steps. The irony brought a fresh bout of tears. Our children, twenty-five dead and a thousand shaken, frightened and crying.
